Michael O'Keeffe is best known for selling Mozambique-focused coal miner Riversdale Mining for $3.9bn at the top of the coal market in 2011.

But in recent years he has taken to snow boots, patrolling iron ore claims in the Labrador Trough, hurriedly being given away in the current bear market.

As chairman of ASX-listed Champion Iron, O'Keeffe's flagship asset is Consolidated Fire Lake North. Until recently, the multi-billion tonne deposit was subject to a 3 per cent royalty held by Fancamp Exploration, but Champion bought back half the claim in June this year for $300,000.

If O'Keeffe can crack a rail solution (and it increasingly looks that way), Fancamp's remaining royalty will be worth considerably more.
