#15 Gulf Alumina

When BHP Billiton's former head of aluminium left the group three years ago, he made what he called a “medium” sized investment in Gulf Alumina, an Australian bauxite developer with huge tenements in Queensland.

The deal was private and the terms were not disclosed, but Alberto Calderon (one of the only executives at BHP to predict a collapse in iron ore prices) now personally holds a royalty over Gulf Alumina's exports.

Bauxite is going higher, Calderon thinks, and Gulf Alumina is well placed. “Somebody said years ago when China gets in, you get out,” he told The Australian Financial Review at the time of the deal. “When China gets out, you get in.”
